Water for Juru Mountain in Rwanda
The challenge:
Some schools and households on Juru Mountain do not have clean water. During the three-month dry season, adults and children have to walk 5 kilometres to Lake Gashanga or the Nyabarongo River to carry dirty water up the mountain in 20-litre canisters. Then they have to collect firewood on the almost deforested Juru Mountain to boil the water. About 30% of households drink the water untreated, which often causes diarrhoeal diseases.

The solution for households:
Our team on site organises the installation of rainwater tanks with a capacity of 5,000 litres each. A ceramic water filter is included in the package. Purchasing in larger quantities makes the tanks cheaper and optimises transport. Payment is made via microfinance provided by the local savings cooperative. To keep the monthly instalments affordable, we provide a subsidy for each tank. We need your help to finance this. This project is set to run for several years, meaning we will be installing several dozen water tanks in successive rounds. The next round is planned for December 2025.

The solution for schools:
We enable the construction of underground rainwater cisterns with a multi-stage filter system. The clean drinking water not only benefits the schools, but is also accessible to the local community. We not only build new water facilities, but also repair existing ones: currently, two schools in our project area are experiencing problems with their ageing facilities.
